James Marsden won’t take ‘Boss Baby 3’ for granted after ‘Disenchanted’ delays

James Marsden has admitted that the long wait for an Enchanted sequel means he no longer takes follow-up movies for granted.

The 48-year-old star appeared as Prince Edward in the 2007 musical, but has had to wait until this year to complete filming on sequel Disenchanted.

A sequel was first announced in 2010 after the original made $341m (£247m) at the global box office, but it has taken more than a decade for the project to finally come together — with the original cast members in place.

When asked by Yahoo Entertainment UK whether he’d reprise his role from The Boss Baby 2: Family Business in a potential sequel, he referred to the long wait for Prince Edward to come back around.

“I’ve learned to never expect sequels to happen,” said Marsden. “Case in point, Enchanted. We did it in 2006 or 2007 and it took 15 years to make the second one, but we finally did.”

Marsden takes over the role of Tim Templeton in The Boss Baby 2: Family Business, in which he and brother Ted (Alec Baldwin) have to become children again in order to infiltrate Tim’s daughter’s school.

They are tasked with carrying out the mission by Tim’s other daughter Tina (Amy Sedaris), who is a Boss Baby and needs the duo to foil the plot of evil headmaster Dr Erwin Armstrong (Jeff Goldblum).

Marsden said he enjoys being part of films that his youngest child is able to watch, as those are often the only films he finds himself able to see.

“When adults ask me what movies I’ve seen heading into Oscar season, nothing,” said the star.

Marsden added: “I’ve got an eight-year-old. I see the DreamWorks movies. I see animation, kids’ movies.

“It’s always a joy to be a part of something like this. We’re living in a tough time right now and just to provide uplifting spirit in a movie like this is always a good feeling. So if they make a sequel, yeah I’d love it.”

Tom McGrath, who has directed both Boss Baby movies to date, told Yahoo Entertainment UK he also isn’t sure if he will return for a threequel.

He said: “Well, it’s a case of ‘is there a story there?’. You can’t do these movies if they just make money. You have to think about whether there’s a story worth telling.”

The Boss Baby 2: Family Business is in UK cinemas now.
