Quentin Tarantino packs a million stars into Once Upon a Time…in Hollywood, his meticulous ode to a bygone era. Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, and Margot Robbie lead the film, which is rounded out by dozens of other famous faces, including Al Pacino, Kurt Russell, Dakota Fanning, Lena Dunham, and Luke Perry, among others. One more star could have been added to the mix: James Marsden, who was announced as part of the film’s cast last June. However, his role was ultimately cut. According to Collider, though, it’s come to light that the Westworld actor was supposed to play a young Burt Reynolds.

Reynolds, who died in 2018, got his start in Hollywood in a number of Westerns, like the series Gunsmoke and the film 100 Rifles. So it makes perfect sense that he would have popped up in Once Upon a Time, a film set during 1969. Tarantino is an avowed Western fan; in the film, DiCaprio plays a fictional actor named Rick Dalton, who makes a name for himself by starring in several Westerns. It’s unclear what happened with Marsden’s role. Reps for the actor have not yet responded to Vanity Fair’s request for comment.

In a recent interview with Deadline, Tarantino said that he initially gave Reynolds the Once Upon a Time script, so the actor could vet the accuracy of the story and the Western references. As a result, the pair struck up a friendship.

James Marsden is circling the role of Stu Redman In The Stand, the CBS Studios/CBS All Access limited series adaptation of the classic Stephen King horror novel. Josh Boone (The Fault In Our Stars) is directing the nine episode arc that he’s scripted with Ben Cavell, based on the post-apocalyptic horror novel by King that vividly outlines the total breakdown of society after the accidental release of a strain of influenza that had been modified for biological warfare and causes an apocalyptic pandemic which kills off the majority of the world’s human population.

Played in the 1994 miniseries adaptation by Gary Sinise, Redman is a former military man who is immune to the virus. He found patient zero in the original quarantine zone but never got sick so the government was precious with him in order to try to find a vaccine from his blood.

Boone is exec producing with Cavell, Jimmy Miller and Roy Lee.

Marsden most recently has been starring in Netflix’s Dead to Me, this after his work in HBO’s Westworld and he has a role in the upcoming Sonic The Hedgehog. CAA and Authentic rep him.

Paramount Pictures is pushing its “Sonic the Hedgehog” movie back three months, from Nov. 8 to Valentine’s Day.

The delay follows fan criticism over the appearance and design of the titular blue hedgehog — particularly his teeth and lean legs.

Director Jeff Fowler tweeted that it was “taking a little more time to make Sonic just right.”

FX is adding a who’s-who of top talent to join Cate Blanchett in Mrs. America.

Uzo Aduba, Rose Byrne, Kayli Carter, Ari Graynor, Melanie Lynskey, James Marsden, Margo Martindale, Sarah Paulson, John Slattery, Jeanne Tripplehorn and Tracey Ullman have boarded the nine-episode limited series, which focuses on efforts to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment.

The project looks at the unexpected backlash led by a conservative woman named Phyllis Schlafly (Blanchett). Through the eyes of the women of that era — Schlafly and second-wave feminists Gloria Steinem (Byrne), Betty Friedan (Ullman), Shirley Chisholm (Aduba), Bella Abzug (Martindale) and Jill Ruckelshaus (not yet cast) — the series will explore how one of the toughest battlegrounds in the culture wars of the 1970s helped give rise to the Moral Majority and forever shifted our political landscape.

Actor James Marsden, star of X-Men and Westworld, is to present the 2019 Laureus World Sports Awards.

James has been featured in a wide range of films and TV shows since he gained prominence on the big screen, including HBO’s critically-acclaimed sci-fi series Westworld; box-office smash Enchanted; 27 Dresses; the X-Men trilogy starring as “Cyclops;” Lee Daniels’ The Butler, in the iconic role of John F. Kennedy; Adam Shankman’s musical Hairspray, as “Corny Collins;” romantic-dramas The Notebook and The Best of Me; comedies Death at a Funeral and Bachelorette; and hit comedy series 30 Rock.

Continuing to expand on his versatile work, up next Marsden stars in Netflix dark comedy series Dead to Me. Westworld‘s James Marsden and veteran actor Ed Asner are set to co-star opposite Linda Cardellini and Christina Applegate in Dead to Me, Netflix’s half-hour dark comedy series from writer Liz Feldman, Will Ferrell and Adam McKay’s Gloria Sanchez Prods. and CBS TV Studios.

Written by Feldman, Dead to Me, which has a 10-episode straight-to-series order, has been described as a comedic Big Little Lies. It is about a powerful friendship that blossoms between Jen (Applegate), a tightly wound widow, and Judy (Cardellini), a free spirit with a shocking secret.

Marsden will play a love interest to Judy (Cardellini) who seems confident and logical, but beyond that facade is a vulnerable man with a complicated past who is drawn to Judy’s big heart and free spirit. He has been one of the main series regulars on HBO’s Westworld for its first two seasons. It’s unclear whether his casting in Dead To Me will impact his work on Westworld where he stars as Teddy Flood.

Sometimes it’s better to be a household face than a household name. If you’re recognized for your face, you’re recognized for your work, perhaps one of the greater honors that can be bestowed upon a performer. James Marsden—an actor whose filmography reveals no distinguishable pattern, no sole interest in genre, story, or character—is hyper-aware of the place he has and continues to occupy in Hollywood. He’s appeared in projects as diverse as the X-Men series, 2007’s fantasy musical Enchanted, 2008’s romantic-comedy 27 Dresses, and now HBO’s explosive Westworld, and when asked about how he chooses his roles and if he’s particularly selective, he’s quick to interrupt with a cute, yet blunt “not really.”

Marsden, 44, isn’t sloppy, careless, or ungrateful though. If anything, he’s open and flexible. Throughout our conversation—over Old Fashioneds at the Ace Hotel in downtown Los Angeles—he often inhabits the voice of a hypothetical film critic. He likes to talk about his image, choices, and career from the outside looking in. “You can always look back and go, ‘Oh, why did you do that movie?’ But you could also look back and go, ‘I can see how he might confuse studio executives. What do I do with him?’” he says.

He narrows in on a type he’s found himself playing a lot: the lovesick puppy who doesn’t get the girl. And he sees how he got that reputation. It happened when Rachel McAdams chose Ryan Gosling in The Notebook, the 2004 romance that made stars of both aforementioned actors. It happened when Jean Grey couldn’t help but fall for Wolverine over Marsden’s broody Scott Summers in X-Men: The Last Stand (2006). It’s a pattern he brings up on his own accord, but is quick to dismiss. “I look at [these roles] through my own objectivity, if I have any. Like, ‘Oh. You were having a great time. Those are the ones that you actually forgot about the camera.’ Anyway, I was reminded of how much an audience really enjoys somebody having fun.”

TORONTO — James Marsden tries to avoid slipping down the rabbit hole of emotional darkness in his career — and after the latest season of dystopian series “Westworld” the actor needed a palette cleanse.

It’s one of the reasons Marsden says he signed onto “Sonic the Hedgehog,” a live-action and CGI animated flick based on the popular video game. While his character in the film is veiled in secrecy, he insists it’s nothing like Teddy, the robotic gunslinger he plays on TV.

“I always try and do the polar opposite of what I just finished, and ‘Westworld’ is a heavy show,” he says of the series, which finishes its latest season Sunday on HBO Canada.
